Cholesterol Tips - - HDL's, LDL's etc - Don't Worry, Be Happy:October 2005 Note: this is for general educational purposes only. If you have a specific concern regarding cholesterol, also consult your health practitioner. Good & bad cholesterol, HDL, LDL’s – we love to make it complicated don’t we? It doesn’t have to be. Some interesting facts. 1. Cholesterol is GOOD for us! Our body’s need cholesterol to build cell membranes, vitamin D, hormones (e.g steroids), & bile acids. 2. Cholesterol levels that are ‘too low’ (i.e from medications) can be just as harmful as high cholesterol. * also, drugs to treat cholesterol compromise/harm our liver, which is the organ that naturally (and ‘intelligently’) purifies the blood of toxins/excess cholesterol etc…so medication is not ideal long-term. 3. Plenty of people with ‘perfect cholesterol’ still have heart attacks. The point is, our modern medical approach is not perfect. According to Maharishi Ayurveda™, which understands that your body is ‘infinitely intelligent’, regulating healthy cholesterol is actually easy for your body if you observe a few key things. While most people focus on diet, exercise etc to reduce cholesterol (which is good), the main problem comes from ‘stress’. According to Maharishi Ayurveda™, cholesterol is generally only a problem when i) ‘ama’ (undigested food) is present. Ama blocks the body’s channels, preventing it from eliminating any excess cholesterol, or ii) the cholesterol gets oxidised – i.e subjected to free radical damage – this is what converts it into it’s harmful plaque-like structure that can lead to heart disease etc. Stress interferes with proper digestion (creating ama), and is one of the main causes of free radical damage. THE TIP - We will give you a whole list of dietary & lifestyle tips for healthy cholesterol at a later time, but for now the No.1 TIP is to not worry (i.e don’t stress) too much about having perfect cholesterol / LDL’s & HDL’s etc. Focus on being ‘happy & healthy’ first. Primarily focus on reducing/avoiding the major stresses in your life & increase the things that make you feel good. Then worry about the specifics of your food/dietary intake. * Seminar attendees – remember the ‘happy rabbits’ that had 70 % lower cholesterol than other rabbits fed ‘exactly’ the same diet!!! Food for thought. ENJOY.
