Prostate Health

* General educational tips only. For individual advice please consult a health advisor.

** WOMEN: Don't delete - this is good for you to read too and pass on/encourage your male friends, partners, spouses etc

Prostate health is one of the most topical health issues of our time at present. Did you know the incidence of prostate cancer in men is as high as the incidence of breast cancer in women? Prostate enlargement (often a precursor to prostate cancer) is found in up to 50 % of men over 50! Now that's pretty serious.

How do you know if you might have a problem or not?

For any man close to over 50, I would suggest seeing your doctor for a check-up regardless of any symptoms. * Though please don't think of me when he or she sticks their finger 'you know where' (yes, that's how they check for prostate enlargement!).

However, you should also see your doctor if you regularly have any of the following - intermittent urine flow (stopping & starting), regularly waking up during the night to urinate, any difficulty/pain in urinating, feeling that the bladder is not quite empty when urination stops, dribbling after urination etc.

This Week's Tips - Healthy Prostate Part 1:

In addition the common recommendations of regular exercise & healthy diet etc, here are 5 (of 10) additional tips from the understanding of Maharishi Ayurveda™ to help reduce existing problems and/or to prevent future ones.

1. Reduce Alcohol & Caffeine intake (Avoid if serious problems) - both stimulate excessive urine and can aggravate the prostate/bladder etc

2. Drink plenty of ‘warm’/hot water throughout the day - this provides a cleansing/purifying effect, eliminates the possibility of the urine becoming too concentrated and promotes proper bladder function.

3. Never suppress urination - this is a big one. It causes immense pressure on the prostate as well as increased concentration of urine which can lead to irritation.

4. Eat plenty of whole brans and whole wheat products - both are good for Zinc - which is very important for seminal/prostate health. * The prostate needs 10 times as much zinc as any other organ. Quinoa is a terrific grain for zinc - look for it in health food shops.

* You might want to sit down before reading No.5 guys.

5. Avoid 'excessive' sexual activity. Excessive intercourse (or more specifically ejaculation), can aggravate the prostate, as each time the prostate needs to resynthesise a major part of seminal fluid. Obviously, if there is 'too much' depletion & and not enough replenishing, this can put an adverse load on the prostate & compromise it's function.

Sorry guys...of course, if you don't want to cut down sex, you can try being extra vigilant in the other areas of prostate health - and don't ask me what 'excessive' is.

Extra Tip: Get Enough Direct Sunlight Exposure (vitamin D):

Contrary to popular opinion that most people...especially Australians get 'too much' sun, new research is showing that that couldn't be further from the truth. Lack of sufficient sunlight (due to sunscreens, long work hours, avoiding the sun because we think it's 'harmful' etc) and its associated reductions in vitamin D are being clearly linked to a whole host of cancers... including prostate.

Obviously getting sunburnt is not good, but make sure you get 15-20 minutes of direct sun exposure 'most days'.

Laughter Medicine:

Prostate Surgery is No Laughing Matter....BUT!

PM John Howard was recovering from prostate surgery and was told it would be six weeks before he could have sex with his wife Janette again.

Tony Blair called to wish John well.

The Pope called him to offer prayers.

Nelson Mandela called him to offer inspiration.

And Bill Clinton called ... to speak to his wife Janette.
