Laughter - Laugh your Way to Health & Wellness:

Laughter Benefits
What's one of the best ways to drastically improve your health while having
great fun at the same time?

What's been suggested by scientists as giving similar benefits to jogging without you
needing to leave your couch?

What did British research show children do 300 times a day that adults
on do on average 18 times a day, that is significant in terms
of compromised health???

The Answer.....................Having a GOOD LAUGH.

Yes, William Fry from Starfield University showed the effects of laughter are
very similar to those of jogging - heart rate increases, blood pressure
increases(temporarily...then reduces!), oxygen consumption/absorption increases etc

While we all know having a laugh is good fun, here's 10 reasons why it's also
great for your health...certainly no laughing matter.

LAUGHTER...

1. Stimulates the production of mood-improving chemicals in your brain -
endorphins (natural 'morphine-like pain-killers & mood enhancers).

2. Releases tension making you physically calmer & mentally sharper.

3. Strengthens your immune function (raises levels of infection-fighting
T-cells & disease-fighting proteins) & reduces stress hormones - Dr Berk & Dr.Tan.

4. Is great for your heart - it's said a full 'belly laugh' is equivalent
to 'internal jogging' for your whole cardiac area.

5. Is great for your respiratory system - a good laugh, helps your body
expel more air - particularly 'old' air, and therefore more waste gases/toxins
etc - from the lungs. This is similar to the 'purifying effect of deep breathing
exercises.

6. Is great for your digestive system - according to Maharishi Ayurveda,
the 'Ha Ha' sound actually resounds/vibrates off the walls of your stomach,
stimulating gastric juices & helping digestion / alleviating indigestion/acid
stomach etc

7. Relaxes the face muscles ( a natural anti-wrinkle/anti-aging treatment!!),
moistens the eyes & tones the vocal cords.

8. More & more research suggests that it helps recovery from illness...do
we really need research to prove that? U.S writer Norman Cousins said he cured
himself of the debilitating condition of ankylosing spondylosis by watching funny films
& reading humorous books.

9. It's infectious - you laughing creates 'bubbles of bliss' in your immediate environment,
stimulating/encouraging others to 'loosen up' & enjoy themselves too.

10. It makes you more attractive to the opposite sex  - do those models with 'attitude'
(i.e. are not allowed to smile, really look as beautiful as someone smiling/laughing???
- & successful in all your relationships/business dealings -
don't we all prefer being with/dealing with happy people.

AND....it's just plain enjoyable. It's what life's about...HAVING FUN.

** NOTE: Forced Laughter:

You may be aware that there are a lot of therapies around these days that
promote laughter etc - there are even Laughter Clubs.
While it is certainly good to promote laughter & try and cheer people up/make them laugh
when they are a bit down (thus these clubs/clowns in hospitals etc are usually
great), we must also be a little careful. Remember our emotions create our
physical reality - trying to 'force' laughter/mirth (as opposed to
'encouraging' it), when someone is genuinely feeling down/depressed is not
always best (we can mask a more serious problem).

Yes laughing releases tension & helps us feel better, but when someone is really feeling low etc, in
terms of healing, it's not 'natural' to try to laugh.

It's like wearing dark sunglasses and trying to see the world in a golden light. Sometimes, it's
okay/good to be feel a 'little low' (most of us can't be 'up' all the time) -
this often is nature's way of making us more 'self-referral' - i.e being more
introspective - looking within, which is often what's needed to deal
with/resolve the underlying cause of what's preventing us from laughing 'naturally'
.

It's a balance thing, but generally it's good to always think of 'encouraging' laughter whenever possible,
but not to trying to 'force' it. Treat the cause of 'feeling low' &
people will 'naturally' laugh more.

Tips:

Remember life is to Enjoy...NOW! Today! Don't wait until you have achieved X,
before you let yourself relax & have fun.

This week & beyond, look to incorporate 1 or 2 of the following into your
normal daily/weekly routine (if not already doing them).

1. Instead of always reading serious books/work/business books, read a Joke
Book
. * Yes Steve Vizards new autobiography counts as a joke book!!!

2. Instead of heavy novels, Cleo or Mens Health before bed, try a humorous
autobiography
. * If you do read Cleo or Men's Health, you could laugh at
yourself for reading the same articles every month...just with different
headings. How many ways are there to have the best orgasm of your life or get a
'6 pack to die for' ???

3. Hang out with people that make you laugh/see the 'lighter' side of life.

4. Go to Comedy Club / Funny Play rather than the theatre or ballet...
though watching grown men in those outfits is pretty funny!

5. Go and do something 'just for fun' / to laugh ...not to learn anything deep,
improve yourself or philosophise on life's mysteries.

6. Go to see a Comedy Movie or watch a Funny Video/DVD. E.g 'The Life &
Times of Derryn Hinch' (hilarious!).

7. Watch little kids trying to dress themselves!!

8. Tickle your partner & tell them that you are not ticklish...which
means they will tickle you mercilessly.

9. Just Laugh for no reason - all emotions are tied to a physical response & vice versa.
Just physically laughing in some way replicates a similar emotional response as real laughter
(though not as good as 'spontaneous' laughter) - see Note below above.

10. If you have nothing to laugh at...just think of Politicians generally...
or John Howard in Drag!!! or Bill Clinton ...just being himself...or try the following one liners...

Have a Laugh - it's Free! One-Liners:

Get a new car for your spouse...it'll be a great trade!

What do women who seek to be equal to men lack? ....Ambition.

What does it mean when a man is in your bed gasping for breath and calling your
name? You didn't hold the pillow down long enough.

What do you call a woman who works as hard as a man? ..."Lazy."

A woman went to a doctor and said , doctor, I have a problem. every time I
sneeze I have an orgasm. the doctor said, oh really, what have you been doing
for it. The woman replied...snorting pepper.

To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little.
To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to
understand her at all.

I know I'm not going to understand women. I'll never understand how you can take
boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the roots,
and still be afraid of a spider.

Research shows that women talk 80% more than men...and 'say' 80% less.

Why do men like smart women? ...Opposites attract.

I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to
annoy for the rest of your life
